Crime

Crime!

Justice. Law. Fairness. What do those words convey? Their definitions became more fluid with each passing year. By the year 2027, society stopped trying to form a consensus regarding their meanings.

With little concern for these terms, six strangers fell victim to their application. They were simply people, focused on climbing their individual ladders. Sam wanted a promotion. Maureen desired a new home. George craved a peaceful household, and Ella strive to right the wrongs of her past. Harvey’s goal was a memorable birthday celebration for his wife. And the only thing Wanda wanted was to gain favor in her father’s eyes. They wanted ordinary things. But they were each willing to go to extraordinary lengths to achieve their goals.

What they got instead of success was the long arm of the law. These six were strangers until becoming acquainted through the bars of their jail cells. Why, you ask? Because concepts like justice, law, and fairness dissolved into history. A history that had long since been removed from textbooks and libraries.

Can they overcome the new definitions of the laws to reclaim their lives? Will these strangers turn into friends, enemies, or collaborators? How will their newfound relationships impact their futures, and more importantly, society as a whole?

It’s been said that everything can change in an instant. Valerie Walker can testify to this. One day her idyllic life was consumed with the mundane tasks involved with being a mother of three active children and the wife of the mayor. From one breath to the next, all of that changed.

Now Valerie struggles to salvage the shattered pieces of her life.  But where doe she begin? Her mother’s heart wants to comfort her husband and children. Unfortunately, their very survival must take precedence over luxury. If Valerie and her husband cannot keep everyone alive, there’s no point in soothing their souls.

Will they survive this tragedy, this shocking surprise? If they do, will they be able to rebuild the peaceful lifestyle they all enjoyed before the catastrophe uprooted them from their tranquility.

Or will this disaster tear them apart?

It didn’t matter that Karla Morrison’s mother had drilled into her head that she was an ordinary woman. Someone no one would notice. Karla still wanted to make a difference in the world. She just didn’t know how to achieve that goal.

Then one day, as she sat crying in the hospital hallway, a stranger named Mitch provided the answer. After the doctor confirmed that her brother would survive, she began her new career. Her new life.

Mitch joined her new life. Karla refused to allow herself to trust his love however. Her mother had always warned her no man would put up with her for long. But ten years later, and he remained by her side. That fact brought her comfort.

Until her world unraveled. One chance encounter exposed the first lie. The rest followed like ants to a picnic. But this was no picnic. It was her very survival.

With more than her own life at stake, Karla needed a way to undo the choices she’d made. Choices designed to improve the world. Not ruin it. Who could she trust? And how could she save the people she loved?
